Stainless Steel for Construction & Infrastructure
From handrails and façades to platforms and building services, stainless steel gives construction projects a durable, long-lasting finish. The right grade and finish depend on where the material will be installed: indoors, outdoors or near the coast.
Kentzu Steel has supplied stainless steel sheets, plates, bars, sections, pipes and fittings to industrial customers in Malaysia and across the ASEAN region since 1983.
Where Stainless Steel Is Used in Construction

304 or 316: Choose by Environment
Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, not corrosion-proof. In the wrong environment, it can still develop brown surface staining or rust. Choosing the right grade for the location is a key decision. Learn more in our guide, What Is Stainless Steel?
| Location | Typical Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Indoors, such as offices, malls and lobbies | 304 | Low corrosion risk in dry, sheltered conditions |
| Outdoors, inland urban areas | 304 or 316 | 316 is safer where pollution is high or cleaning is infrequent |
| Coastal and waterfront | 316 | Salt from sea air causes brown staining on lower grades |
| Near industrial areas | 316 | Airborne pollution increases the risk of corrosion |
| Indoor swimming pools | Specialist advice | Pool air is especially aggressive, so load-bearing fixings need specialist grade selection |

Finish Matters as Much as Grade
For outdoor and architectural work, surface finish affects both appearance and durability. As a general rule, the smoother the finish, the better it resists staining, because there are fewer places for salt and dirt to collect. Smooth finishes such as 2B and BA perform well, and a mirror finish performs even better.
| Finish | Appearance | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| No.1 | Dull and rough | Industrial and non-decorative parts |
| 2B | Smooth, moderately reflective | General fabrication and concealed parts |
| No.4 | Brushed | Panels, trims and architectural features |
| Hairline (HL) | Fine, long brushed lines | Interior features, column covers and lift surrounds |
| BA | Bright and reflective | Decorative trims and panels |
| No.8 mirror | Mirror-like | Feature panels and decorative elements |
For brushed and hairline finishes used outdoors, running the grain vertically is often recommended, as it helps rainwater wash the surface.
Keeping Stainless Steel Looking Good
Beyond grade and finish, how stainless steel is handled, installed and cleaned makes a big difference. A few simple practices help:
- Keep carbon steel away. Grinding dust and tools used on carbon steel can leave iron particles on stainless steel, which quickly turn into rust spots. Protect stainless steel during nearby work and use separate tools.
- Use stainless steel fixings. Mixing stainless steel with ordinary steel bolts and screws can cause corrosion where they meet.
- Design for rain and drainage. Surfaces that drain freely and are exposed to rain stay cleaner than sheltered areas where salt and dirt build up.
- Clean regularly. A useful rule of thumb: when the nearby windows need washing, wash the stainless steel too. Avoid bleach and hydrochloric acid based cleaners.
Construction in Malaysia
Malaysia's construction sector continues to grow. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, the value of construction work done reached RM47.8 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 8.8% from a year earlier, with civil engineering the largest share. Nearly two-thirds of the work was concentrated in Selangor, Johor, the Federal Territories and Sarawak.
Many projects face tropical humidity, frequent rain and, in coastal areas, salty sea air. These conditions make the right grade and finish especially important for outdoor stainless steel.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does stainless steel rust outdoors?
It can. Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, not corrosion-proof. Outdoors, salt from sea air, pollution, contamination from carbon steel or a lack of cleaning can cause brown staining or rust. The right grade, a smooth finish and regular cleaning prevent most problems.
Should I use 304 or 316 for outdoor handrails?
304 is often used inland where conditions are mild. 316 is the safer choice near the coast, near industrial areas, or where the handrails will not be cleaned regularly.
Which finish is best for outdoor architectural stainless steel?
Smoother finishes resist staining better. Mirror, BA and 2B finishes perform well, while rougher finishes collect more salt and dirt. For brushed finishes outdoors, running the grain vertically is often recommended, as it helps rainwater wash the surface.
Can your H beams and channels be used for structural work?
Our angle bars, U channels and H beams are supplied to ASTM A276. For any load-bearing use, a qualified engineer should design the structure and confirm the grade, size and documents required. Send us the specification and we will quote to it.
How should stainless steel be cleaned?
Wash with clean water and a mild detergent, then rinse. Avoid steel wool, scrapers or cloths used on ordinary steel, and avoid bleach or hydrochloric acid based cleaners.
What information should I provide for a quotation?
Provide the product, grade, sizes, thickness, finish, location of use, document requirements, quantity and delivery location.
